त्यासाठी हृदयाच्या स्नायूला आकुंचन आणि प्रसरण पावावं लागतं. आकुंचन पावून ते झेप घेण्याच्या स्थितीत येतं आणि पुढच्याच क्षणी प्रसरण पावत आपल्या डाव्या खालच्या कप्प्यातील रक्त जोराने बाहेर फेकत राहतं. पण हृदयाच्या स्नायूला नेमानं हे आकुंचन प्रसरण पावायला मदत करतात ते काही विद्युतसंदेश. हृदयाच्या प्रत्येक ठोक्यागणिक एक विजेचा लोळ वरच्या भागाकडून खालच्या भागाकडे पसरत जातो. घोड्याला टाच मारून तुडवायला लावावं व तसा हा विद्युतस्पंद हृदयाला आकुंचन प्रसरण पावायला लावतो. या विद्युतस्पंदाचा आलेख म्हणजे ईसीजी.

हृदयाला रक्ताचा पुरवठा करणाऱ्या वाहिन्यांची कोंडी झाली असेल तर त्याविषयीचीही माहिती मिळू शकते. बऱ्याच वेळा आपण विश्रांती घेत असताना ईसीजीची स्थिती सामान्य असते. त्यामुळं रक्तवाहिन्यांची कोंडी झाली आहे की काय हे समजत नाही. अशा वेळेला मग ट्रेडमिलवर चालायला लावून म्हणजेच हृदयावर थोडा दबाव आणत त्याला कामाला लावून मग परत ईसीजीचा आलेख घेतला जातो. यालाच स्ट्रेस टेस्ट असं म्हणतात. या चाचणीतून रक्तवाहिन्यांच्या चोदण्याविषयी माहिती मिळू शकते. आईन्टहोवन या हॉलंड मधील शास्त्रज्ञानं एकोणीसाव्या शतकाच्या उत्तरार्धात ईसीजीचा शोध लावला. त्याबद्दल १९२४ च्या नोबेल पुरस्कारानं त्याला सन्मानित करण्यात आलं.
